Mocollop Castle:
Mocollop is a rare example of a 13th century Anglo Norman Castle with an unusual circular keep (Donjon).
Past owners include Sir Walter Raleigh & the Drew Family.
The chief Parliamentary commander, Oliver Cromwells forces advanced on the castle during the winter of 1649-50, establishing a gun battery on the south side of the river from where they shelled the castle, on capture to prevent reoccupation by opposing forces the Cromwellians destroyed the round keep by removing the east facing wall, this damage can be seen today, although it is still standing after several hundred years.
